Capture sunlight and turn it into electricity

Solar Only Installations

Investing in solar can be a very satisfying and rewarding experience but it isn’t for everyone. It can also be a great way to take control of your electricity bill and achieve some independence but how effectively it can do that will depend on a number of factors. Two of the most significant factors to inform this are:

1)      Your current annual electricity consumption

2)    Your electricity tariff

It is possible to model what percentage of your electricity bill could be saved. If your electricity consumption is on the low side (below the national average) then the potential for savings will also be low which would push out the payback period. The converse is also true: if you use a lot of electricity then you stand to make more significant savings.

The tariff your property is on dictates how much each kWh of electricity costs. The higher the cost, the greater the savings would be. Tariffs are evolving all the time, it is generally good practice to shop around and consider changing in future.

We will design a system that is future proof when possible and optimised to make the most of the space available at your property taking into account the surroundings and your requirements. We will provide a range of options that enable you chose the most effective solution within your budget. We will be transparent about how effective a system could work in your situation. We will provide general advice surrounding tariffs which have a significant impact on design, ideal functionality and pay back periods. We can also help you to reach a decision on whether to add battery storage or not.

We can provide a recently published article that explains 3 broad options for installing solar so you can make an informed decision regardless of who you chose as your installer or what products are used.

Battery Storage Installations

There has never been a better time to consider battery storage. Technology has become safer and more affordable. In the UK there are sometimes opportunities to get paid to use electricity to charge your batteries.

Battery storage (with or without solar), when combined with an energy tariff offering a period of low cost electricity, can outperform solar in terms of saving money and in some cases offer a shorter payback period.  Battery storage technology is available to properties whether solar is suitable or not. Having said that, complementing battery storage with solar as part of a well-designed and balanced system can offer the best of both worlds sometimes achieving over 90% self-sufficiency (<10% of power imported and paid for from the grid) over a year even in the UK climate with reduced sun hours over winter.

Consider the following example based on an EV tariff available in March 2024:

1)      Charge batteries overnight at 9 pence per kilowatt hour (9p/kWh)

2)     During the day when the rate goes up to 36p/kWh, use the batteries to avoid paying 36p as much as possible

3)     That would be almost 20p saved (there are conversion losses to factor in) on each kWh that came from the battery rather than from the grid. How many kWh would depend on how large the battery storage was.

There are reports of people achieving a return on investment in under 5 years.

The best of both worlds

Solar and Battery Storage

Combining battery storage with solar can be the icing on the cake but it is important to design a safe and well-balanced system with mind to future expansion should it be needed.

It is also important to consider potential locations for Inverters and Batteries, whether indoors or outdoors The environment can have an impact on which products to select.

EV Charger Installations

We recommend “solar ready” EV chargers to customers if they already have solar or may consider installing solar in future. These products can divert surplus solar when the sun is shining into charging the batteries in your car for free.

The market is awash with several dozen different manufacturers of solar panels, inverters and batteries. The standards, functionality, specification, quality and level of warranty and support varies considerably. This can make it difficult to compare like with like or to differentiate between cheap systems and good quality systems.

We can share recently published articles to help navigate the complexity of options available in a way that does not promote (or try to sell) any products or services.
